Chapter 17

It felt strange to be returning to the Weatherby Manor… but as they rode up the slight rise from the gate to the house, she also felt a smug sense of satisfaction. Sure, they might have tried to corral her, to control where she went… but she was the captain of her ship, the master of her fate. She was back, and she intended to stay here until she'd figured out how to restore herself to the world as it was meant to be… and if that meant shaking herself out of this delusion by force, then that was what she'd figure out how to do.

She wasn't expecting to be met by a slightly ruffled-looking Sir Baldric in the foyer, his eyes narrowing with suspicion and then widening with surprise when the guards escorted her into the dark and quiet mansion.

"Miss Olmos," he said, raising an eyebrow with that cryptic look on his face.

Still hot, she thought, holding back a sigh. Even in the middle of the night.

"An unexpected pleasure."

"You don't sleep, huh?"

"Not every night," he said, a smile twitching at his lips ever so briefly. "I'll admit I'm pleased to be awake to welcome you, though I'm confused by what's brought you back so soon. The MacClaran hospitality didn't leave anything to be desired, I hope?"

That was interesting, she thought with a flicker of curiosity. That deliberately casual tone… was he hoping for an affirmative answer? She shrugged her shoulders. "It was fine. But I've got unfinished business here."

So, lots of women had arrived here before immediately falling in love with MacClaran men. That was the pattern. Was Baldric… a little jealous, perhaps? That was interesting. She'd had a feeling he'd been a little more receptive to her flirting the other night than he'd been letting on… was this the reason for his reticence?

But before she could probe any further on the subject, Baldric was steering her up the stairs and down a familiar corridor. It seemed the room she'd stayed in the previous night was still set up for her use — and it wasn't long before she found herself back in that familiar, dark little space, though this time the fire wasn't lit. Baldric stayed long enough to light a candle for her with a tinder box, something she watched him operate with fascination. Then he was leaving — and just when she was beginning to think she'd imagined the flirtatious energy they'd been sharing downstairs, he tipped her a sudden wink and then closed the door behind him.

Fighting a wild urge to follow him, to grab him by the wrist and pull him back into the room, Maria settled on the edge of the bed and took a deep breath. She was weary and sore from the walk, and
